Doongurra- Giving Local Indigenous People the Chance of a Brighter Future

Established in 2019, Doongurra Civil Mining is a majority Aboriginal-owned company based in the Pilbara. Doongurra Civil Mining currently employs up to 28 local indigenous operators, which represents around 85% of their work force.

Partners Sarah Johnstone and Leon Lombardi started their civil mining company with the aim of giving local indigenous people the chance of a brighter future through training. mentoring and employment.

When the last cyclone came through Carnarvon, Doongurra Civil Mining was given the job to rehabilitate the road which had been washed away. KEE Hire was able to assist by supplying graders, rollers, excavators and loaders to help in the aftermath.

Leon said, “We’ve been starved for choice for hire equipment up in the Pilbara, so we were very happy when KEE opened a yard up here. Their service has been great and we look forward to forging a strong partnership together up here in the North West.”

Doongurra covers four major aspects of civil construction:

  • Bulk Earthworks & Rehabilitation
  • Road Construction & Maintenance
  • Rail Renewal & Shutdowns
  • Subdivisions

Clayton said “Since helping with the wash aways, we’ve been on various large projects with Doongurra. They’ve hired some big production machines such as loaders and dump trucks for the Gudodi Kadiatri job for Rio Tinto with Austral. We believe in what Sarah and Leon represent as a company. They want to make a difference by giving local Aboriginal people the opportunity to gain meaningful, long-term employment, which is very admirable and we fully support this.”

Sarah is a proud Baiyungu Traditional Owner from the Coral Bay region of WA (Doongurra means ‘dirt’ in Baiyungu language). Leon has more than 30 years experience contracting to Main Roads and Tier 1 mining companies in WA. Sarah also has vast experience working in accounts, transport and project management with Rio Tinto and other major companies.

Clayton said “We have a reciprocal relationship with DMC, we’ve used their transport, (they have a brand new float that we’ve been able to utilise) and they’ve used our transport division for their projects. Recently our surfacing manager, Bumpy Samuel, was able to help DMC by sending KEE’s Spray Seal crew up to the northwest for an emergency job. Our crews flew up and successfully rehabilitated the cattle grids around the Carnarvon region for DMC and Main Roads.

Doongurra Civil Mining consistently provides expertise and solutions that have successfully maintained thousands of kilometres of remote, regional arterial roads, highways, and freeways for their clients.
