A remarkable discovery at White Sands National Park, New Mexico, reveals that prehistoric humans were hauling heavy loads dating as far back as 22,000 years ago. Scientists uncovered drag marks alongside ancient footprints, providing the earliest evidence of primitive transport methods in North America—long before the invention of the wheel.

The transport tracks highlight the long history of moving heavy loads—something Australia’s trucking industry knows well. Much like today’s road trains hauling freight across the Outback, these ancient tracks show the ingenuity of people finding ways to move essential cargo. From wooden sleds to high-powered rigs, transport has always been vital to survival and progress, proving that the need for efficient freight movement is as old as humanity itself.

Introducing ‘Don’ the KEE Transport plush-cat, who has been named after the late, great Donald ‘Bob’ Spiers. For anyone who doesn’t know, Don Spiers was the father of our two directors, Damon and Clayton. We are excited to see the wonderful places ‘Don the Cat’ may visit. Yes, he is microchipped, so if he is lost or stolen, we will know! Stay tuned to the Chronicles of Don…

Driving Forward: KEE Transport’s Role in the Metconnx Project and Beyond

KEE Transport has been delivering concrete panels to the Metconnx project for Permacast. This has established KEE’s presence in the project through Fuel, Hire, and Transport—great work in promoting our strategy of utilising three of our pillars. We are well positioned through the end of September to February, securing a solid run sheet of project work.

Fuelling Success: New Clients, Big Projects, and Welcoming New Faces to the Team

KEE Fuel has commenced working with new clients such as Karak, O’Brien Civil, Martin Collins, and EXP Resources. Fuel has also tendered for the Fremantle Bridges project and is in the final stages of contract execution, providing additional litres for this project in partnership with Laing O’Rourke, further strengthening our long-lasting relationship.

Logistics warmly welcomes two new employees: Vanessa ‘Ness’ Baker, who joins as the Fleet Controller for Logistics, and Tandin Chopel in the Administration Team. Both have embraced the KEE culture exceptionally well, and we are fortunate to have them.

Over the past month, the Logistics division has been busy commencing new projects and working hard to secure future work. Well done, team!

Road congestion in WA is more than just frustrating—it’s costing the economy over $2 billion annually. The worst culprits are the intersections that leave drivers stuck, often missing a green light unless luck is on their side.

Beyond the daily commute, congestion cuts into valuable time with family and friends. According to Will Golsby from the RAC, “Our roads are struggling to keep up with demand.”

The 2023 RAC Commuting and Congestion survey found that 50% of Perth peak-hour drivers are dissatisfied with their commute. Nearly two-thirds of members believe that fixing busy intersections would be the most effective way to ease congestion on Perth roads.

Donald ‘Bob’ Spiers was incredibly hard-working, a great motivator and always ready to lend a hand, whether at the gym or on the road with fellow truckers. His dedication to fitness was unsurpassed, always giving 100% and inspiring those around him.

The Family Tradition

His family has a rich history. His great-grandfather, James ‘Jasper’ Spiers, was a Scotsman who joined the early settlers from Victoria, crossing the Nullarbor with the bullock train to WA. James was not only a landowner and jockey who won the prestigious Perth Cup, but he also ran for Parliament. He contributed significantly to the transport and infrastructure sectors, building roads and serving as the first president of the Wanneroo Shire. Don’s grandfather and father followed in the transporting footsteps, both becoming truck drivers, with Don continuing this family tradition.

Life growing up was not easy for Don. Post-war, his family struggled. His mother, Beryl, worked tirelessly as a cook at Maris Brothers College to ensure there was always food on the table. The family had little, with their house almost bare of furniture. Although his father became a successful truck driver, sadly his drinking habits often left the family without financial security. When his father’s drinking spiralled, his mum would wrap Don in a blanket and they would leave their house and sleep in a public telephone box.

Unbreakable Spirit

Don’s life was marked by resilience and determination. He left school at 14, taking on an apprenticeship as a spray painter at Wark and Wainwright in Leederville. His love for running began here, where he would run from his home in Dover Road, Scarborough to work and back every day. After a stint in the army, where he broke the 3000-meter record, he came back to Perth and won numerous races including the City to Surf and Fremantle Fun Run. Keen to keep his love of running in the family, Don also trained his sons in the art of racing. One year at Whitford’s Fun Run Don, Stephen, Damon and Clayton dominated the day, each gaining first place in their respective age category. The event organisers were so taken-aback by the Spiers formidable winning capabilities, that they were banned from entering the following year!

Don was on target to become a professional athlete until his ambitions were cruelly taken away from him when he was hit by a car while training. Through his passion, he didn’t give up and became the Senior Athletics Middle-Distance Coach at the prestigious Trinity College, where he imparted his knowledge and motivation on hundreds of young athletes to help them reach their potentials.

Building WA’s Infrastructure

Don’s career as a truck driver was equally impressive. He helped build the Narrows Bridge for Clough (driving a Leyland Hippo-Truck) and one of the biggest projects he worked on was for Bell Brothers, where he took the first locomotive off the wharf in Port Hedland for Hamersley Iron in the 70’s. He also used the famous salt-mines for training, running up and down the mounds to keep fit.

Having never touched a drop of liquor himself, when working in Port Hedland Don noticed that the men worked hard, but drank harder. One of the few pleasures they had after a long days yakka was the boxing nights at local pubs. Don had learnt to box at Scarborough Police Boy’s Club and (perhaps less intentionally) on the beachfront in the era of the Bodgies and Widgies. Ready to unleash this hidden skill, Don cunningly waited for the fellow competitors boozing to progress in to the night. Completely sober, he would then step in to the ring, knowing that putting money on himself would the safest bet to an easy win!

Father and Mentor

Clayton fondly recalls the road trips up north with his dad. “He was a dedicated marathon runner,” Clayton said, “but he needed a way to keep in training while hitting transport deadlines.”

So, what was the 1980s solution? Simple! He put six-year-old Clayton behind the wheel of his triple-road train. As he was unable to reach the pedals, his dad used the hand throttle to keep the truck at a steady 12kms ph, so Clayton could keep the truck rolling while his dad ran in front. A bit of old-school ingenuity at its finest!

Don’s work ethic was unmatched, often working 16-hour days without lunch breaks. He set up his own successful trucking business, purchasing his own F10 Volvo single-axle prime-mover. In 1995, Damon and Clayton joined the business as low-loader drivers and Spiers & Sons was born, later inspiring the brothers to build KEE Group in 2008. “What we learnt from our dad was his persistence,” said Clayton and Damon. “Never give up, never give in and never make anyone do anything you wouldn’t be prepared to do yourself. This has stayed with us throughout our lives and business”.

Throughout his life the gym remained an essential part of Don’s routine. Even up until his sudden death, he spent up to three hours a day training in a gym he had created in his garage. His commitment to fitness was admirable.

The Unbreakable Bond

Most importantly, his love for wife Cheryl was unwavering. Cheryl was 18 and Don 21 when they first met, reaching nearly 60 years together. They were in love with each other and true soul mates, not leaving each other’s sides. They built a beautiful house in Wanneroo and they lived with a menagerie of animals including pet kangaroos, dogs, ducks, chooks, bandicoots, bin-chickens and a favourite cat called Scruffy. “I miss Bob terribly,” says Cheryl, “he would wrap his arms around me and tell me he loved me every single day. He was an incredible man, a one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed.”

KEE Group was built on the work ethic instilled by Clayton and Damon’s dad and his forefathers, and we’re proud to carry that legacy forward in serving the great state of WA.

February 2024 is set to be the hottest summer on record for Perth, as another heatwave approaches. The city has had a scorching summer, having already reached six days above 40C so far. As Australian motorists, we’re no strangers to the challenges presented by driving in scorching temperatures. The unforgiving heat of the Australian summer not only tests our resilience but also places considerable strain on our vehicles, particularly our tyres.

As the mercury rises, so too does the stress on the rubber compounds and internal components of our tyres, making them vulnerable to damage and deterioration. It’s a familiar sight and smell on hot asphalt roads—the unmistakable odour of hot rubber permeating the air—a tell-tale sign that our tyres are feeling the heat. For those attuned to the nuances of vehicle maintenance, this smell serves as a warning, prompting us to pay closer attention to the condition of our tyres. Indeed, the smell of hot rubber can be more than just a nuisance; it can be a crucial indicator that our tyres are in need of inspection and potentially, intervention.

In this article, we’ll delve into the implications of driving in extreme heat on tyre health and explore the significance of detecting the scent of hot rubber while on the road and how to mitigate risks.

Key Risks of Driving in Extreme Heat

Overheating: High temperatures can cause tyres to overheat, which can lead to a significant decrease in tire life and performance. When tyres become overheated, the rubber compounds can degrade more quickly, increasing the likelihood of blowouts or tread separation.

Increased Air Pressure: As temperatures rise, the air inside tyres expands, causing an increase in air pressure. If the air pressure exceeds the recommended levels for the tyre, it can result in decreased traction, reduced handling, and an increased risk of tyre failure.

Accelerated Wear and Tear: Extreme heat can accelerate the wear and tear of tyre tread, leading to reduced tread depth and traction. This can compromise the tyre’s ability to grip the road surface, especially in wet or slippery conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.

Dry Rotting: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause the rubber compounds in tyres to deteriorate and dry out, leading to dry rotting. Dry rotting weakens the structural integrity of the tyre, making it more susceptible to punctures, cracks, and other forms of damage.

Reduced Performance: In extreme heat, tyre performance may be compromised, resulting in decreased handling, braking, and cornering capabilities. This can increase the likelihood of accidents and reduce overall vehicle safety.

How to Mitigate Risks and Ensure Safe Driving

Monitor Tyre Pressure: Regularly check tyre pressure and adjust it as needed to ensure it remains within the recommended range specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Inspect Tyres Regularly: Conduct visual inspections of tyres for signs of damage, wear, or dry rotting. Replace any tyres that show signs of deterioration or damage.

Avoid Overloading: Avoid overloading the vehicle, as this can increase the stress placed on tyres and lead to overheating and premature wear.

Drive Carefully: Drive at moderate speeds and avoid sudden maneuvers, especially on hot roads, to reduce the risk of overheating and tyre failure.

Park in Shade: Whenever possible, park the vehicle in the shade or use sunshades to reduce the temperature inside the vehicle and minimize heat-related damage to tyres.

Use Quality Tyres: Invest in high-quality tyres designed to withstand extreme temperatures and provide optimal performance in hot conditions.

By taking these precautions and staying vigilant, drivers can help mitigate the risks associated with driving in extremely hot temperatures and ensure the safety and longevity of their tyres.

Stay cool, stay safe!

Navigating the roads in Australia poses numerous hazards, with one of the most perilous situations for both car owners and truck operators being the inadvertent collisions with kangaroos. So, what should we do if we accidentally hit a kangaroo on the road? We interviewed Lisa Rose, founder of Lisa’s Kangaroo Retreat in Port Hedland and here is what she had to say:

1. Pull over when it is safe to do so. It is important to take the kangaroo off the road as far as possible as other wildlife will feed off a carcass, potentially causing further accidents.

2. If you have gloves in your car put them on. Pull the kangaroo to the side of the road by the tail. The tail will never break off as it is the strongest part of the kangaroo.

3. If the dead kangaroo is a female, check her pouch for any signs of life. If there is a joey and he is NOT attached to the teat, tie a knot in the bottom of a T-Shirt/ blanket to create a pouch shape, and gently remove and place him inside.

4. If the mother is dead and the joey is attached to the teat, as gruesome as it sounds, cut the teat off (as close to the mother’s chest as possible). Joeys are fused to their mother’s teat, so if removed by force, the joey will suffer a horrific death. Leave the teat in the joey’s mouth. You may also have to cut the pouch open.

5. Wrap the joey up so he remains warm- inside your shirt if possible.

6. Ring the Wildcare Hotline who will tell you where to take the joey. They can be reached on 94749055.

“If something can survive being hit at 110 kmph in a pouch, it deserves a second chance- you are its second chance.”

Feed the joey with sugared water/ or an energy drink. Use a spoon, or a latex glove with a hole pierced in the finger makes a perfect teat.

Do NOT feed joeys cows milk, they are lactose intolerant and can die.

If the kangaroo is so severely injured and beyond saving, sadly either a shot to the head or rock to the head is the kindest way to put her out of her misery.

If the joey isn’t in the pouch, he won’t be far away. Wait to see if you can hear him. Approach calmly and keep low to not frighten him.

A joey can live for up to five days in the deceased mother’s pouch. If you find a dead kangaroo it is worth looking in their pouch. Even if the joey has been pecked by crows or looks lifeless, he might still be able to be rescued.

“If a joey can live its last hours being loved, it’s worth it.”

Lisa’s Kangaroo Retreat rescues, rehabilitates and releases wildlife, including injured and orphaned joeys, kangaroos, wallabies, possums and other animals. Field trips to the retreat are fun, educational and heart-warming. Interacting with and supporting animals in need is a great experience for all the family, and a great opportunity for kids of all ages.
